- Story Text: Russian celebrities and film stars strolled the red carpet on Thursday (June 21) at the opening of the 34th Moscow International Film Festival.
Among Russian directors, producers and screen stars, U.S. director Tim Burton was in attendance at the annual movie celebration, and was presented with an honorary award for his 'outstanding contribution to world cinematography,' at the opening ceremony.
The festival opened with Russian film "Dukhless" or "Soulless" which has been praised by local critics. The film is a screen adaptation of the bestselling Russian novel "Dukhless" by Sergei Minaev.
Russian actor Alexandr Nevsky said the new film was one of the festival's highlights that he was looking forward to.
"I'm expecting a large number of beautiful women in beautiful dresses there inside (the movie theatre), and also the film 'Dukhless' - I really want to watch it. I like that production. Thank you," Nevsky told journalists on the red carpet.
The film follows the story of a top manager at an investment firm in Moscow who is successful but cynical.
Russian actor Danil Kozlovsky who plays the role of the manager, Max, is himself a native Muscovite and said he could relate to the film's story.
"It seems to me that this is a very fresh film, very energetic, there's a very good rhythm, and in general, it's a story that could happen not just with a top manager of a large investment company, but with all of us," Kozlovsky told Reuters.
Russian actress Maria Andreevna, who plays opposite Kozlovsky in the film, said she thought 30-something modern Russian audiences would be able to relate to the themes in 'Soulless'.
"They are, as I call them, successful losers. They are very successful - a lot of things work out for them, but they're losers because they don't get what they want. They make mistakes, they choose...they're like butterflies, moths that are flying towards a light, but what's around that light ?" Maria said in an interview with Reuters.
'Soulless', directed by Roman Prygunov, is set to be released in Russia on October 4, 2012.
Other films in the festival's main competition included features from Great Britain, Iran, South Korea, Mexico, and several European countries, in addition to two Russian films - Renata Litvinova's 'The Last Tale of Rita' and Andrew Proshkina's 'Horde'.
