- Story Text: It's the 10th anniversary of the day when Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, and his wife Elena, were executed by the army after being found guilty of genocide by a military tribuanl.
Dozens of Romanians nostalgic for the Ceausescu era gathered around his grave in Bucharest on Christmas Day (December 25).
Others gathered in Revolution Square to commemorate the one thousand people who died during the revolution days. But it came as something of a surprise that so few people turned up for the tenth anniversary, compared to the thousands who have marked the event in past years.
Latest opinion surveys show that many Romanians, suffering during a difficult transition from a communist system towards a market-led democracy, believe they were better off under Ceausescu.
"I am here with my parents because I think life was better during the Ceausescu era." said Mihaii MIhjaea.
In a last-minute Christmas buying spree Romanians rushed to buy shirts, socks or ties belonging to late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in a second-hand sale launched in Bucharest on Friday.
Hundreds of Romanians rushed to the shop opened in the Bucharest conference hall where Ceausescu held his last congress of the Romanian Communist Party in 1989, shortly before he was toppled and executed, along with his wife Elena, in a violent revolt.
On the anniversary of his death state protocol officials offered for sale 500 items of clothing or gifts made to Ceausescu and his wife which were confiscated after their fall.Proceeds from the sale will go to the state budget.
Before his execution Ceausescu ruled Romania with an iron fist, influenced by his politically powerful wife. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
