- Story Text: The fifth World Fin Swimming championships have taken place in Rome, Italy on September 1-2. Equipped with single or double fins plus snorkel breathing apparatus the fin swimmers propel themselves around twice the speed of unaided swimmers.
The women's 800 metres was won by Cheng Chao of China in a time of 7.18.03. Slughina Oksana of the Soviet Union was second with Ji Min of China third. The men's 200 metres event was won by Kudriaev Konstantin of the Soviet Union in a time of 1.25.76. Akhapov Sergei also of the Soviet Union was second with Gioiosi Icaro of Italy in third. The women's 100 metre race was won by Zheng Shiyu of China in a time of 38.25. Cui Min also of China was second with Frelova Svetlana of the Soviet Union in third.
On the final day of competition, the women's 800 metres underwater race was won by Cheng Chao of China in a new world record time of 6.52.31. Diachkina Natalia of the Soviet Union was second with fellow Soviet Svetlana Frolova in third place.
The men's underwater 50 metre race was also won in a new world record time. China's Q. Liu breaking the old record of 15.04 when finishing first in a time of 14.99. Z. Fu, also of China, was second with Gorbounov of the Soviet Union in third.
There was a new world record set in the men's 4 x 100 metres relay. The Soviet team easily broke the old time of 2.32.05 when they finished first clocking a time of 2.30.19.
