- Story Text: Flyhalf Alain Penaud has been called up for
the French team to face England in Paris in the Six Nations
rugby championship on Saturday (February 19).Other than
that both teams are unchanged since their victories over
Wales and Ireland in the opening matches of the tournament.
Both French and English squads were training in the
Paris region on Wednesday (February 16) for their weekend
match.
Both coaches spoke about Alain Penaud's call-up to replace
flyhalf Christophe Lamaison who was injured on Sunday.
England coach Clive Woodward said Lamaison's injury was a
significant loss for the French and left a question mark over
their place-kicking.
But he said England would not "go mad analysing who comes
in at number 10...We want to play the way we've been playing
and whoever they play at 10 we're going to have to defend
accordingly."
"They've got to look at that because (Lamaison's place
kicking) is one of their strengths. He's a world class
kicker," Woodward said.
Centre Richard Dourthe will kick goals, French coach
Bernard Laporte said.
"I'd say we're lucky we have two 90 percent kickers in
(Jonny) Wilkinson and (Matt) Dawson. That's a strong part of
our game," Woodward added.
At Clairfontaine Laporte spoke about his respect for the
England team and their achievements. He said his team must
search for a balance between strength and speed, and then they
could be competitive.
Flyhalf Alain Penaud played for the Saracens team in
London for one season before joining French champions Toulouse
last year.He has a good inside knowledge of English rugby and
believes France will have to learn patience to beat England.
Penaud said he thought the French team was strong and
believed they could play as well as they did when they beat
Wales 36-3 in Cardiff.
Penaud said he was really impressed by the 50-18 thrashing
of Ireland in England's opening match at Twickenham.
The 30-year-old said he saw very few weaknesses in the
strategy of Woodward, but is convinced the first 30 minutes
will be decisive on Saturday.
"The only way to beat them is to be as patient as they
are," he said."They will look for a repeat of last year's
match when we squandered too much energy defending."
England won that match 21-10.
