- Story Text: Hong Kong-based pop singer and reality TV show star, G.E.M., performed the first of three shows in Singapore on Friday (January 30).
Emerging on stage in a cloud of smoke and in clothes covered in glitter, the 23-year-old singer invited cheers and screams from the 5,000 packed MAX Pavilion at the Singapore Expo.
"It's actually quite surprising because it's the first time I even come to this country and on Facebook sometimes I can see some fans saying: "oh please come to Singapore" but I have no clue that there's going to be people actually buying the tickets so it was quite surprising to me and also to my company so if people really want to see it then we do as many as they want," said G.E.M.
Though Shanghai-born and Hong Kong-based, the arrival of Gloria Tang - stage-named G.E.M (Get Everybody Moving) - her fan-base in Singapore proved larger than expected.
Tickets for her debut concert on the island were quickly snapped up and sold out, encouraging the star to add two more nights of performances.
Known for multilingual lyrics, including Mandarin, Cantonese and English, the singer hopes to continue reaching wider global audiences by learning new languages.
"Maybe now I have Mandarin song and Cantonese song, but in the future I hope I can explore more of the different, like, opportunities. Maybe I'll learn Korean or maybe - because I just learnt some Singlish- very Shiok (Singapore slang for conveying pleasure and happiness)", she told Reuters.
The merchandise stands quickly attracted a large crowd of eager fans looking to buy DVDs, CDs and posters after the performance.
"This was my first concert actually, and it's really like - how do I put it - it's really exciting and really gets everybody moving," Sharney told reporters after the show.
"It's very cool, it's really amazing," added Claire, another fan who had seen the star perform.
This is G.E.M.'s second world tour, though the current X.X.X Live World Tour is approaching its second year.
Although G.E.M had already attracted considerable attention in the music industry in 2008, she shot to shame after securing the runner-up position in the reality Chinese TV show 'I am a Singer' last year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
