- Story Text: Spanish movie Marshland ran away with 10 awards including best director and best movie at Spain's annual Goya awards on Saturday (February 7) while Javier Gutierrez and Barbara Lennie won the best actor and actress for their work in the Marshland and Magical Girl.
Stars and fashion graced the red carpet at the 29th annual Academy of Cinematic Art and Science awards as a burst of flashes lit up the night.
Dressed in a black elegant suit, Hollywood star Antonio Banderas walked the red carpet taking selfies with members of the media.
All the spotlights lit when Penelope Cruz made her entrance at the Auditorium hotel where the ceremony took place.
Cruz brought the ceremony to a standstill as she walked the pink carpet in a dress designed by Oscar de la Renta, a Spanish fashion designer who died in 2014.
The 40 year-old actress handed over the Best Movie award to the Marshland crew.
One of the most eagerly awaited appearances was that of Oscar winner director Pedro Almodovar who was invited by the academy to hand over the honorary Goya to Antonio Banderas.
The 65 year-old director was conspicuous for his absence in the pink carpet but posed with the director of the Argentine revenge fantasy Wild tales with the Goya to best Ibero American movie award.
Antonio Banderas received a honorary Goya for his contribution as an actor and producer to Spanish cinema.
Banderas has worked with Almodovar in seven movies and he said the Spanish director was key in putting the Hollywood spot lights on him.
"I can't think, and I guess no one can think on my career without my seven movies with Pedro, that is the reality. I even have to say that I must thank my American career to him. The respect with which the American showbiz has always treated him turned the spotlights to everybody around him," he said after receiving the statue.
Wild Tales is a string of six thematically linked stories each with a central character being cheated or humiliated, who then extracts revenge, often of an extreme form.
The Oscar nominated movie is produced by Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar's El Deseo film producer.
Infidelity, road rage, even cars being towed provoke the ire of Damian Szifron's characters, who explode like pressure cookers and act out the dark, violent and delicious revenge fantasies most people repress.
"I'm very happy with the nomination and being nominated in the five movies for the Oscar. I don't demand much from the possibility of winning the prize or not winning it. We can lose and be very happy, I'm already very happy for going there," Szifron told Reuters after receiving the Goya to best Ibero American movie.
In The Marshland, Javier Gutierrez and Raul Arevalo play the role of two outsiders cops who have to settle their differences to investigate the murder of two young women in a marshland in the south of Spain and bring the killer to justice.
Gutierrez celebrated his award with Barbara Lennie who won the best leading actress award for her role in the mystery film Magical Girl.
Alberto Rodriguez received the Goya for best director for the Marshland.
It was a great night for the Marshland crew who also received the award for best movie.
"The best scenario possible was what happened tonight," said Rodriguez.
