- Story Text: Five days before the start of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, a squad of German athletes has left for the United States.
Thirty-nine hopefuls gathered at Frankfurt airport on Sunday morning (February 3) for their flight to Denver, Colorado. Among them was the German women's ice hockey team who are Olympic newcomers.
Three-times Olympic luge champion Georg Hackl, also on the flight, expressed confidence that security at the Games was adequate.
"You cannot rule out a certain risk but I have great confidence in the Americans providing highest security standards," Hackl said before boarding the aeroplane.
Hackl recently declined to carry the German flag at the opening ceremony on February 8 because it could interfere with his final preparations. According to Hackl, the time between the ceremony and his competition was "simply too short." He added that it was a "tough decision to make."
Franziska Reindl, ice hockey forward, said : "So much money has been spent on security. I am confident everything will work out just fine."
Another ice hockey forward, Stefanie Fruehwirt, was asked if she was ready for the games. She replied: "I sure hope so.
We practised a lot and I hope it will work out. I will certainly do my best." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
