- Story Text: Zambian singing and recording star, Rikki Ililonga, won the Makumbi Arts Festival Song Contest in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Saturday night (10 April).
The contest lasted four days and was held in the Hotel Continental. It attracted some of Zambia's leading vocalists and musicians.
Rikki Ililonga won the contest with an overall score of 54 points with his humorous song "Shebeen Queen". His second song "Musamuseke" was placed fourth. First prize was a television set.
Second prize went to singer Cephas Maseko and the Three Sisters and third to folk singer, Emmanuel Mulemena.
Ililonga's show business career started when he became a member of the Most-o-Tunya band that is now based in Nairobi, Kenya. He then branched out on his own and became a big success. He cuts most of his records to this own accompaniment and his recently released long playing record "Zambia" is currently a big hit.
Last weekend's festival was jointly organised by the Intercontinental Hotel and the National Arts and Music Foundation of Zambia.
It was the first of its kind held since President Kaunda decreed there must be a musical and cultural revolution in Zambia last year.
Since then Radio Zambia has changed its musical output from predominately western pop music to about 80 per cent local content.
