- Story Text: What is typically one of the biggest all star concerts of the year, Jingle Ball at New York City's Madison Square Garden featured, Enrique Iglesias, Craig David, Jewel and a brief appearance by Mariah Carey on Thursday.
Some of the world's hottest performers appeared in New York at Z-100's Jingle Ball 2001. Z100, America's most listened to radio station, known for bringing together some of the most popular musicians of the year just before Christmas at New York's Madison Square Garden each year certainly had no shortage of star power this year.
Latin sensation, Enrique Iglesias was one of the headliners of the Show. He certainly did not disappoint the audience of mostly young girls who screamed in delight at the handsome young performer.
British sensation, Craig David did a hot acoustic version of his chart topping tune, "7 Days." David, a worldwide phenomenon, said that this year, he has a lot to be thankful for,
"You know what, it's kind of everyday is kind of a dream come true. You're waking up in a hotel in a different place and at first you're like man this is crazy and then when you hear a crowd singing all the words to one of your songs that you're written at home thinking, yeah this is kind of cool, because every song you write is your best song until you get to the next and then to see people going wild for it, it's crazy. So I'm very blessed to kind of have that kind of reception."
Pop diva, Mariah Carey was in attendance as a host of the show, not a performer. She came out in a beautiful red satin dress to wow the crowd. Carey, coming off what many believe to be a nervous breakdown this year was asked, "Have you been a good girl this year?" To which she replied, "Yes."
And then after a pause said, "I think so."
Another very hot, superstar performer, Missy Elliott rapped her way across the stage. At a time of year when everyone reflects on good will towards all, Missy Elliott had some poignant words on the topic, "Oh yeah, regardless of how much success you have you always should be nice because you never the day that you wake up and nobody knows who Missy Elliott is and nobody care who Missy Elliott is, you know at least you have a personality that over weighs your music you know and you might have to come back to somebody later and ask them for some help you always got to be sweet and nice."
The concert is a showcase for the best in today's hit music, from rock to rhythm and was also to help benefit families and victims of the tragic September 11 attack.
Net proceeds from Jingle Ball 2001 will go to the Clear Channel Relief Fund to aid the families of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy.
Five for Fighting performed the hit tune, "Superman." Mixed in with the video of the performance were still images related to the destruction of the World Trade Center. One of today's hottest hip hop artists, Jay-Z said that as a New Yorker, he feels that he had to step up to help out his city, "It's my city man, you don't mess with my city, I got to come to help, come to its defense, you know what I'm saying so anytime there's a benefit concert or anything that's going on, I got my antenna up, I'm trying to help out."
One of the most rocking performances of the evening was the pop star Pink doing her hit tune, "Get the Party Started" Another of the hottest singing sensations of today is Alicia Keyes who not only has a beautiful voice but is also an incredibly accomplished piano player. She performed her latest hit, "A Woman's Worth," the follow up single to her smash hit, "Fallin."
The boy bands were represented this year by O-Town while the up and coming rock band, Lifehouse was on hand to perform as well.
Clear Channel Radio Group, the owners of Z-100 said that funds raised will go directly to benefit the New York chapter of the American Red Cross, as well as the families of victims from the Fire Department of New York and the New York Police Department. The Ronald McDonald House is also a beneficiary of funds raised from the concert. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
