- Story Text: Tom and Penelope cruised the crowd in style last night as Vanilla Sky received its premiere in London.
Vanilla Sky reunites one of Hollywood's most powerful actors Tom Cruise with his 'Jerry Maguire' director, Cameron Crowe. It also introduced Cruise to the charms of Penelope Cruz, who provided suitable comfort when Cruise announced the end of his ten year marriage to Nicole Kidman. The two are now inseparable. Nicole Kidman may be picking up trophies for star performances while her ex-husband is being panned by the critics but no bad reviews are going to take that grin off his face.
It could also explain why Miss Cruz gets such endless pleasure from watching the finished film. "It's a movie I want to see five, ten, fifteen times." The critics are having a hard time managing once. The general feeling is that Vanilla Sky is a poor, fluffy, popcorn take on 1997's Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) - a Spanish mystery thriller that Cruise bought the rights to - that inspired director Cameron Crowe.
The project was worked on by Cruise and Crowe for a number of years and both say they had no concerns about making the same film, just four years after the original was released. In fact, they refer to their 'Vanilla Sky' as a cover version, not a remake. The team say they brought their own thoughts and perspectives to the story, with one of the major differences being that this latest version is not left open ended, like its Spanish counterpart was.
It tell the mysterious tale of a dashingly handsome, David Aames, played by Cruise a millionaire surrounded by friends like Steven Spielberg (who has a cameo role) who is 'snowboarding' through life. He is badly disfigured in an auto accident, the film then takes the audience on a weird and wonderful journey where reality and fantasy are intertwined.
Cameron Diaz plays Tom Cruise's casual bed partner Julie Gianni, an aspiring singer, but things take a turn for the worst when she confronts him with her love and the feelings are not reciprocated.
Producers are hoping the relatively modest $25 million at the US box office will be picked up in the European run.
