- Story Text: Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise hit Tokyo to promote his new film Vanilla Sky, along with his leading lady and latest love, Penelope Cruz.
Film fans went wild to catch a glimpse of Hollywood's hottest double act, who accompanied by director, Cameron Crowe gave the fans a chance to quiz the stars before the premiere of the romantic thriller that blends fantasy with reality.
Japanese cameramen and reporters also got their chance to meet the stars, turning out in droves to catch a glimpse of them.
Cruise said he was inspired to do the film after seeing the 1997 Spanish movie "Abre Los Ojos" (Open Your Eyes) -- Vanilla Sky is an English re-make of the film.
"First of all I saw "Open Your Eyes" and for me it was an adrenaline rush," Cruise told reporters which premieres in Tokyo and opens at theatres in the United States on Friday (December 14).
"And so I showed the picture to Cameron Crowe and got started talking about it and we felt it could be a very entertaining film because it has the themes Cameron wanted to explore, pop culture, relationships. He does male-female relationships better than anyone today, characters that he creates are extraordinary and he understands and he is a romantic and I am very much a romantic -- am I talking too much? (INTERPRETER SAYS IT'S OK) I think that he put in the theme of the eternal nature of love and having this roller coaster, this pop culture-type roller coaster ride in the twists and turns, and there would be a lot of fun for the audience to go on that ride in the film," Cruise said.
The movie is about a rich womaniser played by Cruise, who falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend. But the very next day, he has a car accident while out driving with an ex-girlfriend. He survives the crash although his face is disfigured and his ex-girlfriend dies.
Then the man's luck seems to change dramatically -- the girl he fell in love with declares her love for him, the doctors are able to rebuild his face and he discovers his life is beyond his control.
"It is about the eternal nature of love, it is about the male/female relationships and what is casual sex. Also it looks in terms of choices we make in life and how that affects other people's lives and taking responsibility for your life,"
Cruise said.
Penelope Cruz who also costarred in "Abre Los Ojos" where she played the part of the best friend's girlfriend, takes on the same role in Vanilla Sky.
"I loved working with everyone, Penelope is enormously talented and we had a lot of fun," added Cruise who developed a relationship with Cruz while working on the movie.
Vanilla Sky opens at Japanese box offices on December 22, ahead of the New Year holidays.
