- Story Text: There wasn't a statuette in sight as fans joined former cast mates for the 20th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's career - launching film "E.T: The Extra Terrestrial." An updated version of the film, is poised to be released into US theatres.
It was a star-studded event as Steven Spielberg, Drew Barrymore and the rest of the E.T cast re-lived two decades of old memories and Hollywood celebrated the twentieth anniversary of one of the most loved films of all time, "E.T: The Extra Terrestrial."
The event was held to raise money for the Special Olympics and featured five time Academy Award winning composer John Williams conducting a 100 piece orchestra in a live score-to-film performance, the first time in history a non-silent film was presented in its entirety with live orchestral accompaniment.
"E.T" moved audiences around the world in 1982 and helped launch Steve Spielberg's career into dizzying heights.
The hugely successful director says the film is "just a little piece of wonderment in my life, this little guy came into my life and everyone else's and kind of did his magic."
The film also launched the career of six year old newcomer, Drew Barrymore, who captured hearts as Gertie.
Barrymore went onto battle drugs and alcohol, but is now a successful actor and a powerful name in Hollywood. She is quick to acknowledge how important E.T was for her career saying it opened all the doors for her.
Henry Thomas took the lead role as Elliott. He says it was a strange experience to be acting alongside an inanimate object but has only positive memories of the film and working with Spielberg. Thomas has no doubts about the film's appeal twenty years on. " It's a film about compassion and that's always a nice message for kids and for adults, " Thomas says.
The 2002 version of the film includes never before seen footage, state of the art computer-generated enhancements and a digitally remixed soundtrack. The film will soon be released upon a new generation of viewers, a true test of the longevity of this crucial part of American film history. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
