- Story Text: Turkey's worst fire in 100 years swept through the city of Bursa, 95 kilometres south of Istanbul, devastating the bazaar quarter and surrounding area.
The fire, which took 12 hours to put out, broke out on August 24. Nearly 2,000 shops were destroyed, many of them jewellers.
Fire brigades from other cities and towns, including Istanbul, rushed to help the local brigade. Their work was not helped by a light breeze which helped to spread the fire amongst the old and wooden shops.
Miracle of the blaze is that out of a population of more than 131,000 only about 10 were injured and none was killed.
The fire is believed to have been started by an explosion caused by a carpenter heating glue in an oven.
The entire population of Bursa, one of the oldest and most beautiful of Turkey's cities, is in mourning. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
