- Story Text: In Bad Wiessee, West Germany, July 19, groups of former high ranking officers of Hitler's Wehrmacht, and leaders of the present day West German armed forces assembled for the funeral of Ex-Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, the man who authorised the world war two bombing of Warsaw, Rotterdam and London. He died of a heart condition in Bad Nauheim July 16 at the age of 74.
Gathered at the small cemetery, some of the officers who served under him paid their last respects. Among the many floral tributes was a wreath from Ex-Grand Admiral Donitz, and another from a group of Italian officers.
During the early stages of World War two, Kesselring was the brain behind the mighty German bomber force that caused so much destruction throughout Europe. Later he became supreme commander of the German forces in Italy and North Africa.
After the war he was sentenced to death for the execution of 335 Italian civilians. This was later commuted to life imprisonment. The British Government ordered his release in 1952 on the grounds of failing health. After his release he formed the "Stalhelm" organisation - for army veterans.
