- Story Text: Russian girls crushed strong Scandinavian and German competition to take first three places in the five-kilometre cross-country race - a highlight of the World Nordic Ski Championships at Strbske Pleso, Czechoslovakia, yesterday (Monday).
Twenty-eight-year-old teacher Galina Kulakova dominated the field of 50 competitions. Her time of 18 minutes 7.09 seconds was just over 20 seconds faster than team-mate Galina Pilyushenko, who took the silver medal.
Completing the Soviet Union's sweep of the first three placings was Nina Fyodorova, who finished less than a second behind Pilyushenko to take the bronze medal.
