Story Text: The airlift of 2,000 families of the British forces in Malta began on Saturday (8 January) under strict security.
The departure of the wives and children over the next week is the prelude to the withdrawal of all Britain's 3,500 army, navy and air force men from the ancient fortress island following the Anglo-Maltese row over the rent for British bases on the island.
The first "Family Special" -- a VC-10 transport aircraft -- took off from the military section of Malta's international airport at Luqa this morning, carrying 130 wives and children.
