Nine British soldiers were slightly injured in an explosion at their barracks in Duisberg, West Germany, on Wednesday. In Dublin, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) issued a statement saying it carried out the attack.
The blast hit an accommodation block in them early morning at the Glamorgan barracks in Duisburg where soldiers of the 35 Squadron Royal Corps of Transport were asleep. The explosion ripped a hole in the wall of the building, used by single soldiers. It blew off part of the roof and scattered fragments into the street outside the barracks.
An Army spokesman said that nine soldiers sustained minor injuries, cuts from broken glass and other small objects, but no one needed treatment in hospital.
The IRA, in a statement issued through the Irish Republican Publicity Bureau in Dublin and sent to the British Press Association news agency, said it carried out the bombing. In May, the IRA said it killed three British soldiers in separate gun and bomb attacks in the Netherlands near the West German town of Bielefeld.
