- Story Text: The 2001 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) women's championship, 2001 has started in Taipei.
The opening ceremony on Tuesday (December 4) included a parade of flags from 14 participant countries including the People's Republic of China.
More than 200 children performed coreographies inspiring in Tai-chi movements in front of an enthusiastic crowd and watched Taiwan's president Chen Sui-Bian.
Apart from China, the tournament also featured teams from Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, India, Northern and South Korea, Thailand, Guam, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan and the Philippines.
The 14 nations are divided in three groups and they are playing at different venues in Taipei to qualify for the final on December 16.
Hosts Chinese Taipei beat Malaysia 14-0 in the inaugural match following the opening ceremony on Tuesday (December 4).
On Wednesday (December 5), the team from mainland China showed their superiority against Hong Kong, beating 10-0 with some amazing goals by the powerful Chineses players.
At a press conference after the match, Chinese team head coach, Ma Yuan An, said: "Some of our players are young with good potential. So if we have the chance, we want to give them a chance play high quality games against ternational teams in the future."
Chinese team captain Sun Wen said players from her country "get much attention from the major leagues in the United States because we continue to play against strong teams from America and Europe."
Liu Ying, number 13 for the Chinese team, felt confident that they will win the AFC Woman's Championship this time and explained it was normal that they beat Hong Hong by 10 goals: "We expected to win this game because they are amateur and we are professional." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
