- Story Text: English Premier League champions Manchester United swept aside a Malaysian Select XI 6-0 in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (July 22), with Ruud van Nistelrooy netting twice in the first match of the Reds' pre-season southeast Asian tour.
Thousands of Malaysians swarmed the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur as English Premier League champions Manchester United took to the field in their trademark red jerseys against a Malaysian Selection in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (July 22).
The Red Devils started with their top-notch players, among them, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, goalkeeper Fabien Barthez and also new signings Ruud van Nistelrooy and Juan Sebastian Veron.
Manchester United began attacking from the starting whistle.
Dutchman van Nistelrooy, who cost United 19 million pounds (27.19 million USD) in April, slotted past the keeper after a clever back heel by Dwight Yorke put him through in the seventh minute.
A lobbed pass by captain Roy Keane in the 36th minute again left Van Nistelrooy with just the keeper to beat -- which he did this time with a chip.
He was substituted at half time, but those 45 minutes were enough to have opposition manager Allan Harris reaching for the by now familiar comparisons with Marco van Basten -- the great Dutch striker for Ajax and A.C. Milan.
While van Nistelrooy shone, Argentine international Juan Veron, also making his debut after his British record 28.1 million pounds transfer from Lazio, had a quiet game in front of a crowd estimated at 68,000.
In between van Nistelrooy's strikes, Yorke created another, threading the ball through the Malaysian defence for David Beckham to blast low into the net after 29 minutes.
There was plenty more action as United hit the woodwork three times before the interval, and in the second half they doubled their score through England Under-21 midfielder Luke Chadwick in the 71st minute and a brace from Andy Cole after 46 and 79 minutes.
United's tour of southeast Asia continues with matches in Singapore on July 24 and in Bangkok on July 29. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
