- Story Text: British actor and comedian, Dudley Moore was buried near where he died in New Jersey. At the family's request, it was a very small and private ceremony.
A small group of family and friends gave a modest send-off on Tuesday (April 2) to British comedian Dudley Moore, the puckish pianist who became an unlikely Hollywood sex symbol after starring in "10".
The 66-year-old Moore died last Wednesday (March 27) of pneumonia after a long battle against Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare, degenerative Parkinson's-like disease that made him a prisoner in his own body.
Some 30 friends and family -- no big name celebrities -- gathered under a tent and tossed red and white roses onto the grave at the Hillside Cemetary, New Jersey, while a small brass and strings band played a dirge.
A flower display shaped into a piano keyboard was left behind to mark the site, which did not yet have a gravestone.
Several people left the ceremony sobbing heavily, made their way back to the procession of cars.
Neither Bo Derek, who starred opposite Moore in the 1979 film "10" that catapulted both of them into stardom, nor Liza Minnelli, his co-star in the blockbuster movie "Arthur", showed up at the tightly guarded ceremony.
The tight group of attendees huddled together under bright sunshine on a hill overlooking a pond in a small-town cemetery, about 24 miles from New York.
One person said that the family wanted to keep the event low key.
Moore's burial stood in contrast to the funeral of legendary funnyman Milton Berle, who was eulogized on Monday (April 1) in Los Angeles suburb at a zany memorial heavily attended by Hollywood stars.
Moore had earlier been transported from the Higgin's Funeral Home in nearby Watchung. He died in a private home in Plainfield, New Jersey. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
