- Story Text: More than 300 political prisoners emerged from Greek prisons on Tuesday (21 August) and into the arms of their families. The prisoners were freed under an amnesty granted by President George Papadopolous, who was sworn in on Sunday.
Among those set free -- 35-year-old Alexandros Panagoulis, the former army private, who was sentenced to death five years for trying to kill Mr. Papadopolous. Panagoulis looked weak and pale, and blinked in the bright sunlight as he walked uneasily from the Boyati Prison.
Panagoulis was met by his mother, and showed newsmen scars on this chest, claiming he'd been tortured and beaten. He alleged that his jailers had even attempted to assassinate him. He did not repent having tried to kill Mr. Papadopolous, which he saw as an act of honour, and pledged to continue the struggle for the overthrow of the Government.
