- Story Text: Singer Fiona Apple is finally releasing her third album after staying out of the spotlight for six years. "Extraordinary Machine" hit record stores October 4. Days later, fans gathered at Tower Records in the heart of Hollywood for a special performance and autograph signing session by Apple. Her latest collection of songs has been surrounded by controversy for months: eleven of the tracks were leaked on the Internet before the final versions were produced, making the rounds on peer-to-peer networks. Apple says she was angry about it at first, and even quit working on the project. But she then decided whoever was responsible actually did her a favour.
Meanwhile, fans waged a "Free Fiona" campaign believing that her label, Epic Records, were refusing to allow the singer to release her latest work. The company denies the claims. In fact, with support from Epic, she worked on new versions of the tracks with producer Mike Elizondo. Elizondo, perhaps bets known for his collaborations with Dr. Dre and Eminem, was introduced to Apple by Brion, who had also produced her last studio project, 1999's "When the Pawn . . ." Elizondo played bass on that album. The final "Extraordinary Machine" features nine reworked tracks, two songs that kept their original form -- the title track and "Waltz" -- and a new song, "Parting Gift." A DualDisc features live performances, a video for "Not About Love" and behind-the-scenes footage.
When asked to describe the title of her new CD, Apple says it is simply about her. Apple also says she has mixed feelings about being back in the public eye. "Strange as hell," says Apple. "It feels good some days. It feels bad some days you know, it's just another part of life." Apple says she is also excited to experiencing touring again. But this time she wants it to be a little different than in the past. "This whole thing is kind of like a science experiment for me," laughs Apple. "For right now what's immediately ahead of me, touring the country and maybe actually leaving my hotel room this time and seeing some of the places I am playing at. That's what I am looking forward to." Known for her confessional lyrics, Apple says she believes that some of the thoughts she expresses on "Extraordinary Machine" are the purest reflections of her as a person. At her in-store appearance the dedication of her fans was readily apparent. "I'm a Fiona Apple fan because I believe she's very personal, deep, emotional, raw. I connect with her very much on a soulful, fundamental level, and she's very inspiring, and, she's like a survivalist and she's very, very confident and I just really admire her for everything she does," said Carly Tittle. " Her lyrics are just amazing, they, it's just-- she's so good with her words," said another fan, Bobby Maknoon. "She's really different than a lot of artists out there. She just says these lyrics that you never hear from other people singing them. They are very strong and personal, and the music is very good and fun," said Whitney Loritson. Apple will be making more in-store appearances and talk shows in coming weeks and months, including an October 11 stop at "Late Show With David Letterman." And, she starts her tour in November 22 in Portland, Oregon, ending up in New York City on December 11. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
