- Story Text: Mafia boss arrested in Czech Republic.
A fugitive Sicilian mafia leader convicted of
several killings and sentenced to life in prison in Italy
has been arrested in the Czech Republic, police said on
Friday (August 12).
Police told a news conference Cosa Nostra boss Luigi
Putrone, who was sentenced in absentia for murder in the
1990s, gave up with little struggle when confronted near
the northern Czech city of Usti nad Labem.
Czech police worked with their Italian counterparts in
tracking down Putrone and said they suspect he may have
been hiding out in the Czech Republic as far back as 2000
or earlier.
"We are sending a letter to the Italian Ministry an
announcement about the arrest and asking them to send us
within 40 days the request for extradition," Said Justice
spokesman Petr Dimun.
Putrone was tried, convicted and sentenced in Italy for
the murder of two judges, as well as seven others.
Czech officials are expected to immediately begin the
process of extraditing Putrone back to Italy.
