- Story Text: Australian Craig Parry won the West German Open golf title at the second extra hole of a sudden death play-off, on August 27, beating the overnight leader Mark James.
But an equally happy man was Spain's Jose-Maria Canizares, whose fifth place clinched the ninth and final automatic spot in the European Ryder Cup team to face the Americans in Britain next month.
Parry shot a superb final round of 64, seven-under-par, to tie James, who had a 70, then won the event when the Briton three-putted for a bogey.
Parry and James had finished the fourth round with scores of 266, 18 under par.
Michael Allen of the United States assured himself a solid third place after shooting a birdie at the 18th hole, to come in 17 under par.
Canizares, who equalled the course record with a 62 in the third round, birdied the final two holes for a 69 to tie with West German Bernhard Langer.
Langer missed out on the automatic place but was one of the three discretionary choices on the team picked by captain Tony Jacklin.
The other two were Ireland's Christy O'Connor junior and Howard Clark of England but the major surprise was the omission of former British Open and US Masters champion Sandy Lyle.
Lyle, who has had a wretched season, was left out at his own request. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
