And we saw the structure knowing there could be people below and that people could die. It was a very sad accident." - Story Text: The amateur photographer who captured on video the moment a massive crane collapsed at the construction site for Sao Paulo's World Cup stadium killing two workers said he turned on his camera just seconds before the "terrifying" accident.
The shocking footage which shows the moment the crane pitches to the side and comes crashing down was shot by architect and urban planner, Marcio A. Campos, who said he was taking pictures of the Arena Corinthians on Wednesday (November 27) when he noticed the crane was swaying.
"When I went to take a picture I saw it (the crane) was moving beyond what was normal. And this was just a matter of four or five seconds it was hitting the side of the stadium and started to fall. So I hit the video button on my camera and ended up getting a 10-second flash video at the moment the crane fell to the ground. It was terrifying," Campos told Reuters on Friday (November 29).
The accident occurred as the crane was lifting a large, 420-tonne piece of the stadium's roof into place.
Campos, an architect, was visiting the construction project with colleagues and friends who were curious about the progress at the site.
The S Paulo stadium, formally called Arena Corinthians but known locally as Itaquer for the area where it is located, was 94 percent complete at the time of the accident, according to the stadium's website.
Campos said the scene of the accident was chaotic.
"It was like a scene from a movie. You just see people running, scared and not knowing where to go. The people were running because the thing was falling and hitting the structure and the people didn't know if there would be a domino effect. So they desperately ran. You just see the desperation. And we saw the structure knowing there could be people below and that people could die. It was a very sad accident," Campos said.
The two people killed in the incident were construction workers working at the site.
Workers have now been killed at three World Cup stadiums - in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and Manaus.
The Corinthians project was already behind schedule and workers had been scrambling to meet a December deadly to complete the stadium set by FIFA.
The crane collapse was the latest incident to cast a shadow over preparations for the Cup, which have been plagued by cost overruns, delays, and a dramatic downsizing of the public transportation projects that were supposed to be the event's main lasting legacy for Brazil's 200 million people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
