- Story Text: The World Food Programme has intensified its efforts to
raise aid and support for over 14 million people the world
body estimates are at risk of famine. Executive Director of
WFP James Morris added a boost to the aid campaign by
personally visiting some of Ethiopia's most affected areas.
Dozens of emaciated children and their parents
assembled at Defiker village, most of them with match-stick
legs and protruding bellies due to malnutrition, to welcome
visitors from the World Food Programme.
Health workers say most of the villagers here are caught
in the centre of a drought stalking the Horn of Africa and
they suffer from kwashiorkor, marasmus and diarrhoea, all
diseases associated with lack of food.
The United Nation's food agency says that about 14 million
Ethiopians face worsening food shortages and possible
starvation after a long dry spell that led to a poor harvest
in many parts of the country of around 67 million people.
Ethiopia's government has appealed for 1.4 million tonnes
of food assistance to feed its starving people.
"We admire your courage and please know that you are not
here alone, the rest of the world loves you and cares for you
and will do its very best to provide food, to be helpful,"
said the Executive Director of WFP James Morris.
The Ethiopian government has complained recently that
donors are not moving fast enough to help stop a crisis that
could surpass the Great Famine of 1984. U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID) has led the way by
announcing a new food aid pledge of 262,000 tonnes to help
feed the drought victims. The new pledge brings the total U.S.
Government food aid contribution to a level of 500,000 tonnes
since July 2000.
Morris also visited the construction site of a water pan
that will trap rain water for agriculture and domestic needs.
