- Story Text: The ceasefire in Vietnam officially went into effect this morning (Sunday). Saigon showed little outward reaction, but outside battles continued way past the 8 o'clock deadline.
After 30 years of intermittent hostilities, which have claimed more than two million lives, and with a final uneasy night of ground fighting, the war is over -- in principle if not practice.
Saigon, once the pearl of the Orient but new disfigured by decades of war and domination by foreign armies, showed few signs of joy. Its citizens waited apprehensively for sure indications that the ceasefire was not just an excuse for a complete United States withdrawal but was the beginning of real peace.
The ceasefire followed a day and a night of an all-out drive by Communist forces throughout South Vietnam. President Thieu, in a nation-wide address, said Communist attacks reached a record level overnight.
