- Story Text: Military jets stood alongside civilian airliners in a mammoth display of the latest in flight technology as the 41st Paris Air Show got under way on Saturday (June 10).
The air show signals the start of a nine-day whirl of deal-making for the world's aerospace industry.
New French President Jacques Chirac formally opened the show on Saturday afternoon and inspected a guard of honour.
United States (U.S.) firms were there in strength despite boycotting the 1993 event because of fears the French were stealing their secrets.
The main attractions, both in the air and for the deal-makers on the ground, are the B2 "bat wing" U.S. bomber and the world's biggest twin-engined airliner, the Boeing 777.
The shroud of secrecy surrounding the B2 will only be lifted briefly. The plane will not be on display until Sunday and then only for an hour. Washington is particularly sensitive about this technology which was only formally unveiled last year.
Another West European consortium, Eurocopter, presents its Tiger attack helicopter which is doing battle in Britain for a giant twobillion pounds (3.19 billion (USD) United States dollars) army order.
This year's show is bigger than ever with more exhibitors -- 1,630 from 41 countries -- and 220 aircraft on show.
