- Story Text: The first joint military exercise on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) territory between Western forces and their former Eastern Bloc foes ended in the Netherlands on Thursday (October 27) after a week in which language problems were the common enemy.
Soldiers from 12 countries spent the week struggling to make themselves understood as they acted out a peacekeeping operation during a civil war similar to that being fought in Bosnia.
Cooperative Spirit was the third joint exercise between NATO forces and former Warsaw Pact troops since the alliance launched its Partnership for Peace in January to strengthen military ties with East European countries.
The first exercise was held in Poland in September, while a naval operation was held in the Baltic Sea earlier this month.
Another four exercises are scheduled for 1995.
Despite the communication problems, senior NATO officers said the exercise had clearly helped to break down old feelings of mistrust between the former enemies.
"The exercises have provided a good foundation from which to build," said NATO General George Joulwan
