- Story Text: - INTRO: Bosnian Moslems and Croats have reached a power-sharing agreement in the divided city of Mostar, after several days of difficult negotiations.
--------------------------------------------------------- Bosnian Moslems and Croats reached agreement on Tuesday (August 6) to form a local government in the city of Mostar based on the results of recent local elections.
Dragan Gasic, a European Union (EU) spokesman in Mostar, said an agreement had been reached after several days of EU-mediated marathon talks intended to persuade Croats to accept the election results. Details of the accord would be released later in the day, officials said.
Mijo Brajkovic, mayor of Croat-controlled west Mostar, said the main problem had been for the two sides to agree on several issues but he said that the negotiating process that had been going on for two years had now nearly finished. He said the agreement was now on paper and would have to be implemented.
His counterpart, mayor of Moslem-controlled east Mostar Safet Orusevic, welcomed the agreement, saying the two sides had been working together after the Croat side had failed to recognise the June local election results.
EU administrator Sir Martin Garrod said he was extremely happy that an agreement had been reached, adding that he would give the EU presidency a recommendation.
Bosnian Croats boycotted a newly-elected city council after the June 30th poll in which Moslems won a narrow majority. EU mediators have struggled to end the political deadlock and have insisted the Croats recognise the election results.
European powers and the United States have pushed the Croats to drop their boycott, fearing an impasse in Mostar could jeopardise the success of Bosnia's national elections in September.
Moslems and Croats fought a bitter 10-month war in 1993-94 before agreeing to form a federation under intense pressure from the United States. Some of the worst fighting in the war took place in Mostar.
