- Story Text: Taiwan's Premier Lien Chan returned from his country's highest-level visit to Europe since 1949 on Thursday (June 22) and pledged to press on with the diplomatic initiatives that have enraged China.
"To go abroad for visits, it doesn't matter where, it's part of my job. It's not the first and it will also not be the last time," said Lien after returning from a seven-day, three nation tour to Europe.
Archrival Beijing, in a rebuke coinciding with Lien's return, said it had lodged a strong protest with the Czech Republic for hosting the premier of a country which Beijing views as a renegade province.
Lien met Czech President Vaclav Havel in the highest point of a tour which also took in visits to Austria and Hungary. Lien called Havel a "firm friend" of Taiwan and criticised communism.
Taiwan and China split in 1949 after Mao Tse-tung's communists drove their defeated nationalist enemies from the mainland and into refuge on Taiwan.
Since then China has made it a top priority to block Taiwan's international contacts, but Lien appealed to Beijing to understand that Taiwan is a separate entity which has no choice but to pursue a place on the world stage.
