- Story Text: The Commander of the United States (U.S.) troops taking part in the first Russian-U.S. joint military exercises said on Monday (September 5) the manoeuvres were going better than he had expected.
U.S. General Richard Keller said all stages of the exercises, which have been code-named "Peacekeeper-94", had gone well, from the initial airlift, to the site preparation and the operations already completed by the joint teams of Russian and U.S. soldiers.
The manoeuvres were held at the Totsk military base in the Ural mountains near the border with Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, communist supporters gathered outside the U.S.
embassy in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, to protest against the exercise.
They blamed the United States for the former Soviet Union's breakup.
