- Story Text: - INTRO: Wildfires have continued to burn across tens of thousands of acres (hectares) in the United States' hot, dry West.
----------------------------------------------------------------- A wind-whipped wildfire raced through 8,000 acres (2,400 hectares) of trees and brush in western Nevada on Tuesday (August 6), threatening up to 80 homes.
The fire broke out near Verdi, close to the California state border, Monday afternoon and was fanned by winds of up to 30 mph (50 kph).
The fire was threatening 70 to 80 houses in Caughlin Ranch, a housing development near Reno. People were evacuated from their homes in the threatened area. The blaze was within a half-mile (one km) of the houses, and firefighters were battling to keep the fire away.
Dozens of fire crews were battling the blaze, which burned fiercely in sagebrush and pines, lighting up the night sky.
Earlier, between 100 and 200 people were evacuated from another area, but they were allowed to go back when the fire was turned away from their homes.
The annual fire season in the western United States got under way much earlier than usual this year, because vegetation was dry in several states hit by drought.
Hundreds of firefighters worked round the clock to battle fires in Nevada.
