- Story Text: Bosnian Croat soldier Ivan Stjepanovic was sentenced to death by a Bosnian Serb court on Friday (March 29) after he was convicted of war crimes which included his involvement in the death of more than 80 Serb villagers.
Defence lawyer Goran Majstorovic told journalists he would appeal the sentence passed by the military court in Banja Luka, the main Serb stronghold in north Bosnia.
The prosecution said Stjepanovic served in the 106th battalion of the Bosnian Croat Defence Council (HVO) during fighting in northern Bosnia.
He was accused of killing some of the villagers and of abetting the killing of others in attacks on three settlements over a period of four months.
Majstorovic said during the 10 day trial that no evidence had been found to prove Stepanovic's participation.
Also on Friday, thousands of Bosnian Serbs took to the streets in the northern town of Teslic in a show of support for Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and military commander Ratko Mladic.
Both men are wanted for questioning concerning war crimes by the International War Crimes Tribunal sitting in The Hague.
Teslic is known to be a staunchly pro-Karadzic and pro-Mladic town.
