- Story Text: Indonesian officials and Aceh rebels meet for peace
talks in Helsinki.
Indonesian communications Minister Sofyan Djalil
told reporters before leaving for the second day of talks
on Wednesday morning (July 13) that he was very optimistic
in reaching a final agreement by the end of the week.
"We have come very far. If you can remember that the
first time we came here in last January the distance, the
gap between GAM (Free Aceh Movement) and the Indonesian
government was very wide. The environment was so unfriendly
at that time and now we have moved very far away. I like to
say as if we build a bridge already, and then I think we
will be able to cross the bridge," he said.
Another sign that a deal could be imminent was the
presence in the Indonesian delegation that arrived in
Finland on Monday of Major-General Bambang Darmono, a
senior Indonesian soldier who previously led a military
crackdown against GAM fighters.
"Mr. Bambang Darmono is participating in discussing the
security arrangements. The security arrangements and its
technicalities, out of a military perspective mean how to
collect weapons later on and how to redeploy our military
force and things like that. All this technical things need
to be discussed and Bambang Darmono is very knowledgeable
about that and he discussed that issue with the
counterparts from the EU because as you know, EU and ASEAN
will participate as members of the monitoring team," Djalil
concluded.
The rebels have already agreed to set aside their
demand for independence, and to settle for some form of
autonomy within Indonesia.
The conflict in Aceh has persisted for over three
decades. The current peace talks began after the December
tsunami hit the province, and are seen as the best chance
to end the fighting that has killed some 15,000 people
since 1976
