- Story Text: Russia and France have pledged to work together to stop
the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The
statement came during a meeting of defence and foreign
ministers of the two countries in Moscow.
At a meeting of the Russia-France security cooperation
council in Moscow on Tuesday (July 8), the foreign ministers
of the two countries said they held a joint position on the
need to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and his French
counterpart Dominique de Villepin said they shared "very close
stands" on the situation in Iraq, North Korea and Iran.
With the current international focus on Iran and its
nuclear programme, Ivanov and de Villepin called on Tehran to
broaden its cooperation with the United Nation's nuclear
watchdog body, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy agency).
IAEA chief, Mohammed ElBaradei, is due in Iran on July 9
amid mounting pressure on the Islamic Republic to accept
tougher inspections of its nuclear sites.
"We view the Iranian nuclear issue from a joint position
on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. In
this regard we are for Iran broadening its cooperation with
the IAEA, particularly concerning the signature of additional
protocol on the accords of IAEA guarantees," Ivanov told a
joint Moscow news briefing with French counterpart de
Villepin.
A view echoed by the French foreign minister.
"We share the same conviction about Iran. Both Russia and
France intend to fight the evil of proliferation of weapons of
mass destruction that is a source of instability. And Iran in
its turn must adopt certain measures in order to convince of
its intention to cooperate with the IAEA and not to develop
nuclear weapons," said de Villepin.
Russia has been helping Iran develop its nuclear
facilities which Tehran says is intended for civilian use, a
claim disputed by Washington, who has accused Iran of trying
to acquire nuclear weapons.
Tuesday's French-Russia meeting in Moscow and the remarks
on Iran, follow the two nations' close stance over Iraq,
leading up to and during the U.S.-led war which toppled the
regime in Baghdad.
The French delegation, headed by de Villepin and
including Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, met Russian
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
The Russian leader also emphasised the two countries'
common approach in "building up of future global security and
to the key role of the United Nations".
