- Story Text: Premier Chou En-lai's death in Peking will have only a limited effect on China's political succession, according to specialists on Chinese Communist affairs in Taiwan yesterday (January 9).
But there was no immediate official comment from the Nationalist administration in Taiwan which still considers itself the sole legitimate government of China.
In Taipei, most of the government buildings and public offices as well as Taipei railway station were flown their Nationalist flags on full mast.
Commenting on Chou's death, Dr. Han Li-wu, former Director of the Institute of International Relations, said "Since he had not taken part in Peking's policy-making for the past six months or so, his passing will have only impact on the regime's succession problem."
Dr. Han said he thought Chou could have played the role of a transition-link between the old and the new leadership in China if he had died after Chairman Mao Tse-tung.
Meanwhile Legislator Li Tien-min, who has written much about the late Premier, said "Chou had no peer within the Chinese Communist hierarchy as a nimble foreign policy executive, and added "All signs indicate that Mr. Teng will succeed Chou."
