- Story Text: Malaysia has rearmed its forces with West German rifles assembled locally in place of the traditional British SLR. The Heckler-Koth 33 automatic rifle is lighter than the British weapon and uses a smaller calibre of ammunition.
The troops are already saying the new German weapons are easier to use in jungle conditions. The Malaysians have placed an initial order for 30,000 Heckler-Koch short range automatic rifles but no price has been revealed yet.
The Heckler-Koch uses 5.56MM ammunition, compared with the 7.62MM rounds of the British SLR. The Malaysians tossed three weapons similar to the American Armalite before choosing the German rifle.
