- Story Text: An Indonesian court has set August 7 to hand down the
verdict on Amrozi, one of three militant brothers accused of
playing a central role in last year's Bali bomb attacks.
The court also began the first day of trial for Ali
Imron--last of the three brothers to stand trial.
Chief Judge Made Karna adjourned the penultimate
session of Amrozi's trial and set the verdict date after
defence lawyers made their final summary on Monday (July 21).
"On the seventh of August at 9 a.m. the trial will resume
with the agenda of reading of verdict by the panel of judges,"
Karna announced.
It will be the very first verdict in any of the Bali
bombing trials, passing judgement on the fresh-faced Muslim
militant who has said he was proud the devastating attacks
killed white people.
Prosecutors have demanded Amrozi be sentenced to death for
his alleged role in the October 12 attacks on Indonesia's
famous resort island which killed 202 people, mostly foreign
holidaymakers partying in nightclubs on a typical Saturday
night.
On the same day, Amrozi's brother--Ali Imron--who has
confessed to involvement in assembling the bombs, attended his
first day of trial for his involvement in the attacks.
Imron is the younger of three brothers that include
Mukhlas, the suspected commander of the Bali operation and
Amrozi, the first suspect to be arrested and who has said he
was proud the attacks killed white people.
Police say Imron, charged with plotting and organising
terror crimes, learnt his bomb-making skills in Afghanistan.
"The defendant has planned the criminal act of terrorism
and intentionally used violence to create terror and fear, as
well as causing massive casualties by taking the freedom and
lives of others and by destroying public facilities,"
prosecutor I Gusti Putu Sulaba told the court, adding that
Imron was physically involved in the planning stages of the
bombings.
"To have physically prepared (the bombings) by attending
meetings, providing materials, buying the van and a motorbike,
assembling the bombs, recruiting participants as well as
providing financial resources," Sulaba said.
Appearing as a witness in earlier sessions, Imron gave the
most detailed testimony yet on the execution of the bombings,
saying the main blasts were detonated using cell phones in an
operation that went off as "scripted".
Imron has confirmed police and prosecutor statements that
one militant who took part in the attack was a suicide bomber,
who wore an explosives-laden vest into the popular Paddy's Bar
on the Kuta nightclub strip. A minivan crammed with explosives
was also parked outside the Sari Club, just across the road.
More than 30 militants have been arrested over the
attacks.
Amrozi's verdict will be closely analysed as the world's
most populous Muslim nation tries to convince the
international community it is serious about tackling Islamic
radicalism.
The 40-year-old mechanic, whom the press dubbed the
laughing bomber for his pretrial behaviour, has admitted his
role during the closely-watched trial.
Indonesian officials have blamed the bombings on Jemaah
Islamiah, a Southeast Asian Muslim network accused of carrying
out a terror campaign in the region.
Intelligence officials have also linked Jemaah Islamiah to
al Qaeda, the militant group Washington accused of carrying
out
the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
