- Story Text: Storms have battered parts of Austria causing vast
amounts of damage and forcing people out of their homes and
workplaces.
The storms showed no signs of letting up with
forecasters on Thursday (August 8) saying that more bad
weather is on the way.
The weather was hot and humid as many inhabitants of the
town of Krems in eastern Austria turned out to see the damage
that days of rain had caused. Many were wearing clothes more
usually seen on the beach as they shored up their homes and
shovelled away the mud that swept into the streets with the
flood water.
"The whole restaurant, all the electricity - it's all
ruined," said one restaurant owner in the town whose business
was flooded.
"Wachau is a world cultural area and from time to time
there are big thunderstorms, this is the second this year.
First it was the hail, now it's thunderstorms moving in from
the Wald Viertel to the north of where we are. Everything here
was flooded as you can see," said local maths teacher Josef
Proskowtisch standing in the mud outside his apartment block.
Firecrews have battled to pump water out of basements and
garages overwhelmed by the volume of rain falling over the
past few days.
In the neighbouring Czech Republic one young woman was
killed overnight as a tree fell onto a hut in which she was
staying.
Insurance payouts will run into millions of euros say
Austrian insurers.
