- Story Text: Ukrainian singer wows Warsaw with with an
eye-catching mix of frenetic dancing, skimpy leather
costumes and passionate vocals.
Singer Ruslana, a cult figure in Ukraine, was
accompanied by a group of dancers in warrior costumes on
Saturday (June 19) at her concert in Warsaw.
The young singer won 2004's Eurovision Song Contest,
and brought to the world's attention a new style of music.
Originating from the old Slavic culture of South-western
Ukraine, Ruslana's music is often called ethno-pop.
The performer made a career in her homeland by singing
folk ballads and rhythmic dance songs, accompanied by
striking stage performances. Her album "Wild Dances" (Dyki
Tantsi) sold more than 170,000 copies and received the
"platinum" title in Ukraine.
"It (my music) comes from the Carpathian mountains, the
highlands, like in Poland," Ruslana said.
"It's a very old and unique culture. We have the
Carpathians, a land that gives a lot of drive, a lot of
energy. And Europe is just crazy about this. Everybody is
used to Latino, American, Spanish, African, Indian
inspiration but nobody is familiar with this inspiration."
Fans from Ukraine followed Ruslana to Poland where she
performed at the "Wianki 2004" festival in Warsaw on the
Vistula river shore. The "Wianki" festival - or "Garland
festival" takes place on the third Saturday of June and is
a combination of the old tradition of the Ivana Kupala
festival and a modern picnic.
