- Story Text: Smoke has been seen billowing from the top part of the
Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Smoke poured from Paris's famed Eiffel Tower on
Tuesday (July 22) as what appeared to be a fairly small fire
broke out at the top floor of the edifice, fire services and
witnesses said.
Firemen were on the spot after being tipped off at 1721
GMT that a fire had broken out, a fire services spokesman
said.
A Reuters reporter at the scene said there was a "fairly
thin trail" of grey smoke drifting into the blue sky from the
top part of the famous tower in the early stages and that the
pall had dwindled as time wore on.
The fire services spokesman gave no other details at the
outset.
An LCI television presenter said the tower -- built for a
1889 world fair and to commemorate the centenary of the French
Revolution -- had been evacuated and nobody was injured.
The tower in the heart of the French capital, more than
300 metres (yards) high and weighing more than 10,000 tonnes,
is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Europe.
Six million people visit the tower each year, according to
Eiffel Tower representatives. Many use the mechanical
elevators rather than braving the mostly metal edifice's 1,665
steps.
