- Story Text: Seven German navy ships have passed through Egypt's
Suez Canal on their way to take part in the U.S.-led hunt for
members of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
Three German frigates and four supply ships were
passing through the waterway on Monday (January 21) morning,
along with one Canadian frigate.
The ships were expected to complete the transit later on
Monday.
A Canadian embassy official in Cairo said the frigate was
likely to replace HMCS Halifax, one of a number of Canadian
ships that has taken part in the operation since October.
A German embassy official said the German ships would join
international forces gathered in the Indian Ocean region as
part of the U.S.-led war on terror declared after the
September 11 attacks by suspected Islamic militants on U.S.
cities.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder won parliamentary
backing in November to provide up to 3,900 troops for the U.S.
campaign.
Since Afghanistan's Taliban government collapsed in
November the war has turned into a U.S.-led hunt for
operatives from the al Qaeda Islamic militant group.
Members of the network, which Washington says carried out
the September 11 attacks, have been on the run since U.S.
strikes ousted them from bases in Afghanistan.
