(13 shots) TOLBERT: "This conference will therefore demonstrate to the world that we indeed worthy of the principles we enunciate. We must now commit ourselves to the elimination of alien oppression not to introduce a new form of oppression of our own people. An important aspect of the problem of human rights, a question that must be bared uppermost in mind, is that Africa has more than four million refugees. Probably the largest refugee population anywhere in the world. We must recognise the fact that these people for the most pat, fled their homeland because they were denied their fundamental human rights as citizens of their country. They were forced to abandon their own lands because of the astrocities inflicted upon them by their own governments, to deny with impunity their civil, political social and cultural rights. We cannot and must not forget that Africa has her own share of human horrors, indignities and deprivations. Thus the refugee problem is intensely relevant to our fight for the restitution, readiness and protection of human rights and human dignity in our continent."
