- Story Text: Microsoft Inc. mogul Bill Gates announced that his
foundation will earmark $100 million in the search for an AIDS
vaccine.
Gates, whose Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been
established to fund health and education projects, made the
announcement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"The leaders gathered here should go away from Davos with
a unanimous and absolute commitment to the International AIDS
Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). A vaccine is the only way to end
AIDS for all time," Gates told the World Economic Forum.
An IAVI statement said AIDS is the world's number one
cause of death among infectious diseases, and that it killed
500,000 children and 2.5 million adults last year, according
to the World Health Organization and UNAIDS.
Gates' commitment extends from 2002 to 2006, during which
time the Initiative hopes 25 possible vaccines will be
introduced into development and comparison trials, said IAVI.
