- Story Text: The world's biggest-ever conference of international religious leaders opened in Louvain, Belgium, on Wednesday (28 August).
The conference is being attended by almost 500 delegates from 50 countries. Religious groups represented included Christians, Jews, Moslems, Sikhs, Buddhists and others. The delegates will discuss a vast range of topics -- from Cyprus and South Africa, to the environment and "the permissive society".
The delegates were welcomed at he opening session by the Primate of Belgium, Cardinal Leon-Joseph Suenens. Other speakers included the Archbishop of New Delhi, Monsignor Angelo Fernandes, and the Vietnamese Buddhist poet, Thich Nhat Hanh.
The conference continues for a week, and will divide into discussion groups to deal with such topics as development polices, the environment and religious freedom. On 3 September, all the religious leaders will gather again to adopt a "Declaration of Louvain" - a summary of the conference's findings.
The Louvain conference is the second of its kind. The first was held in Kyoto, Japan, in 1970.
