GREECE: SOCIALIST LEADER PAPANDEROU URGES HIS GOVERNMENT TO SINK TURKISH RESEARCH SHIP.
- Title: GREECE: SOCIALIST LEADER PAPANDEROU URGES HIS GOVERNMENT TO SINK TURKISH RESEARCH SHIP.
- Date: 10th August 1976
- Summary: 1. MV Papandreou speaking 1.46 PAPANDREOU: "At this moment a Turkish ship is carrying out research on the continental shelf that belongs to the Greek islands. This is the equivalent to an act of war, equivalent to an invasion of Turkish troops into out land territory and the response should have been exactly the same -- namely the only proper response was and remains still, to sink the horror. I have already made it very publicly that we disagree with the policy the government of Greece has chosen to follow. We do not believe that recourse to the Security Council of the United Nations is at all productive, for it is not conceivable that the Security Council will enter questions concerning the continental shelf of the Greek Islands in relation to the continental shelf of the land mass of Turkey. Instead, most likely, it will ask the two parties not to have recourse to force. This means that the Greek government will be restrained by the Security Council in carrying out its national task, which is to stop the ship which without permission of the Greek government is invading Greek territory." - Story Text: Greece has appealed to the United Nations for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to discuss the activities of the Turkish research ship, Sismik One. The ship is surveying sections of the Aegean Sea which Greece claims as part of its continental shelf. The leader of Greece's Socialist Movement, Mr. Andreas Papandreou, disagrees with the government's decision and has called for stronger action.
