- Story Text: Khodorkovsky's parents say their son is innocent;
exhibition of trial sketches opens in Moscow.
Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and co-defendant
Platon Lebedev were in court again on Wednesday (May 25),
as judges continued their marathon summing up in the two
men's trial on charges of fraud and tax evasion.
The summing up is already in the third day of its
second week. As the court process continued on Wednesday,
Khodorkovsky's parents took part in a ceremony marking the
end of the education year at a school outside Moscow funded
by Khodorkovsky when he headed Russian oil giant YUKOS.
Boris Khodorkovsky said the school was evidence that
his son had never been interested in "stuffing his
pockets".
"If for a second I felt that he was guilty, or that he
could commit a crime like this, I would have killed him
myself; and I have said this before. He was not brought up
in a way which made him only care about stuffing his own
pockets. He doesn't care about his own pockets," said Boris
Khodorkovsky.
Khodorkovsky's mother told reporters she still had a
glimer of hope that her son's trial outcome may not be as
bad as has been predicted.
"I am trying to view this (trial of her son Mikhail
Khodorkovsky) with some hope. Otherwise I would lose all my
will to live. My husband, when he feels bad, comes to this
place, and he feels better afterwards. Children don't let
us lose hope and feel old. Isn't that right?," said Marina
Fliponva Khodorkovsky.
The presence of Boris Khodorkovsky and his wife Marina
was organised by the media officials at Khodorkovsky's
press centre.
They also organised the opening of an exhibition in
Moscow of sketches done from the trial and about the
Khodorkovsky prosecution by Russian artist Pavel Shevelev.
The exhibition opened in Moscow on Tuesday (May 24) night.
"I got the idea for these sketches when I went to
visit the court; I came to the court as a citizen to
support the people (on trial). When I saw what's going on,
I was surprised, shocked and realised it was a unique
situation and that I had to do something," said artist
Pavel Shevelev.
The court could reach what is widely expected to be a
guilty verdict at the end of this week, one of
Khodorkovsky's lawyers told reporters on Monday (May 23).
The billionaire's lawyers have accused judges of
dragging out their judgment to kill off media interest.
After a week of summing up, the judges had only read a
third of the wad of documents they need to get through
before giving their verdict.
The judges have already declared the 41-year-old
founder of the crippled YUKOS YUKO.RTS> oil company guilty
on all seven charges against him. But they must complete
the summing up before a formal verdict.
Even Khodorkovsky's lawyers have said they expect a
conviction and the only question left is the length of his
jail sentence. The prosecution is seeking 10-year sentences
for him and co-defendant Platon Lebedev.
The trial has scared investors and strained President
Vladimir Putin's relations with the United States, which
has warned the Kremlin it is damaging Russia's interests.
Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, had been
funding opposition parties before he was arrested at
gunpoint in a raid on his private jet 17 months ago.
