- Story Text: The World Wildlife Fund has held an unusual
demonstration in Brussels, demanding the European Union pay
attention to the state of human blood.
The environmental organisation World Wildlife Fund
staged a demonstration on Friday (October 29) outside the
European Commission, demanding to know why there has been
no decision yet on a proposed chemical law.
Last month, the WWF took blood samples of various
Members of the European Parliament and found - not
unsurprisingly - the presence of not less than 50
chemicals in the blood of the MEPs. There were traces of
pesticides, flame retardants, plastifiers, grease resistors
and other chemicals which contaminate human blood.
The demonstrators said that human blood was so
contaminated that no self-respecting vampire or werewolf
would touch it.
The European Commission, a year ago released a draft
chemical law known as REACH in a bid to phase out most of
the harmful chemicals that are found in human blood today.
Since then, the REACH proposal appears to have disappeared
into the ether. The European Parliament has not even
started debating the proposal. The WWF thinks it's time for
urgent action.
WWF Communications Manager, Julian Scola, said: "The
European Union has got a pretty good law in front of it. It
needs to adopt that law, it needs to strengthen it slightly
and not delay. For the sake of humanity and for wildlife,
we need better protection against chemicals now."
"Vampires are sick and tired of contaminated blood,"
said Scola, adding that they were "fed up with their diet
of pesticides, flames retardants, plastifiers and other
chemicals".
