- Story Text: Police have fired teargas in the Swiss town of
Lausanne after anti-globalisation protesters smashed
commercial premises, while in Geneva protesters have smashed
shop windows and destroyed cars.
Thousands of anti-G8 protesters have converged on the two
towns to take part in demonstrations coinciding with the start
of the Group of Eight summit of industrialised countries in
the neighbouring French spa town of Evian.
Clashes erupted between anti-globalisation protesters
and police in the Swiss town of Lausanne on Sunday morning
(June 1).
The trouble occurred after a group of about 1,000 largely
peaceful protesters wound their way through the city to
protest the G8 summit in Evian across the Swiss border in
France. At the back of the demonstration a hard core group of
about 300 protesters started smashing up a petrol station.
The protesters then confronted police farther on in the
city centre. Police fired teargas and brought out armoured
vehicles to disperse the protesters.
Meanwhile in Geneva, protesters, who aim to disrupt the
start of the Group of Eight summit later in the day, sat down
on the Mont-Blanc bridge, which links the two sides of the
city -- with the airport located in the right side of the lake
and Evian on the left.
Many delegates are due to fly into Geneva for the
three-day summit, bringing together leaders of eight powerful
developed economies, including U.S. President George W. Bush,
and specially invited heads of state from developing countries
in the French lakeside resort of Evian.
Police patrols will be keeping a close watch on the
protesters after a group of around 300 smashed shop windows
and destroyed cars in the Swiss city's centre early on Sunday.
The march is going to cross Geneva in the direction of the
border with France. It should end in Annemasse, some 6
kilometres away. Police put up barricades to prevent
protesters moving off permitted routes. Army helicopters hover
overhead.
The G8 includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy,
Japan, Russia as well as the United States.
